Caring for a Diamond

While diamonds may certainly be forever, they still require some personal maintenance and care to ensure their most brilliant performance. Storage is equally as important when not wearing them.

Diamond Cleaning

Like anything you wear, diamonds get smudged, soiled and dusty. Lotions, powders, soaps, even natural skin oils, can put a film on diamonds and reduce their brilliance. Even elements in the air can discolor the mountings of precious jewelry. We strongly recommend cleaning your diamonds to ensure the maximum amount of light can enter and return the diamond to its initial brilliance. It just takes a little TLC. Listed below are four ways to clean your diamonds:

1. Prepare a small bowl of warm suds with any of the mild liquid detergents    used in your home. You can brush the piece/s with an eyebrow brush    while soaking. After you are finished brushing, rinse the diamond/s under    warm running water. Pat dry with a soft, lint free cloth.
2. Make a half-and-half solution of cold water and household ammonia in a    cup. Soak the diamond/s for 30 minutes. Remove and tap gently around    the back and front of the mounting with an eyebrow brush. Return the    diamond/s to the water/ammonia solution once more and drain on tissue    paper or clean cloth.
3. A liquid jewelry cleaner kit provides another option. Choose the kind most    suitable to your needs. Avoid touching your clean diamond/s with your    fingers. Handle your jewelry by its edges.
4. You can go hi-tech and purchase a small jewelry-cleaning machine. There    are many types available today and they will clean almost any piece of    jewelry in a matter of minutes. The cleaning machines usually consists of a    metal cup that you fill with water and detergent. When the machine is    turned on, a high-frequency motion creates the cleaning action.
